IDK, maybe I’ll do it for other fandoms just for the hell of it and spam everyone obnoxiously. Yeah. Sounds like a plan. (THAT IS WHAT YOU GET FOR NEVER TALKING TO ME, PARTS OF THE INTERNETS THAT ARE NOT THESECRETROSEGARDEN.)

• Answer:

  1. My favorite character: The Girl Herself. Utena. I adore her beyond reason, even when she’s being painfully dense; I’m actually not even sure why, because I would normally be drawn to characters with at least a little bit of cynicism somewhere in their character, so on those grounds basically any other character in the series who isn’t miki would be a more logical choice. In total honesty I want to shake Utena pretty often and tell her to get it together, but it doesn’t in any way make me love her less. I have this sneaking suspicion that it’s actually her backdrop which makes her work so well as a character; against the pit of horrors that is Ohtori Academy you need an Utena so desperately. She’s pure bloody-minded hope.
  2. ANOTHER favorite character: Juri, who is a more typical choice for me possibly, ahahaha. I think she’s super-interesting, I am fascianted by her issues and fuck-ups and hang-ups and her outer shell of cynicism carefully hiding a core of “OMG D: D: D:” and also gdi Juri stop faling for straight chicks already. Also she’s hot and also she can kick your arse. She should have fabulous lesbian adventures.
     
     P.S. Sorry Anthy I really love you too maybe next time you’ll get the declaration of love you know I really can’t separate out my top three characters into any kind of proper order, hmph.
  3. My favorite character relationship: This is a tough one because there are so many. The thing about Utena is that the relationships are just basically fascinating in general: even characters I don’t really care about (LIKE ANY OF THE DUDES SORRY TOUGA PUT YOUR NIPPLES AWAY I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THEM) get more interesting (note: not more likeable) in terms of their interactions with others. But in the end this comes back to my favourite characters of course: Utena’s relationships with Anthy and with Juri. Anthy’s relationship with the universe. I actually ship Utena with both Anthy and with Juri, by the way, with the former being more of a “some day together” way and the latter more in a “this is confusing D: I do not understand D: BUT AT LEAST WE CAN HAVE FABULOUS ADVENTURES” kind of way. Utena and Juri can totally have good times on the understanding that it’s really not any kind of permanent arrangement. Admittedly possibly in some other universe. But then again post-series? Wide open. A whole lot of stuff can happen before Utena and Anthy find each other again (which they will, ahahaha, you have no idea how rarely I can buy into this kind of crap, I am not actually v. romantic to say the least, but UTENAAAAAAA)
  4. The moment/character/THING/WHATEVER that first hooked me on the fandom: Hooked from episode 1, baby
  5. One of my favorite moments: any time in the movie when Anthy and Utena stare meaningfully into each other’s eyes/make out WAIT THAT WOULD BE LIKE THE ENTIRE MOVIE :D, the finale of the series is heartbreaking in the best possible way, I actually think the crack episodes are pretty great, I mean, I skip crack episodes in anime series, but in Utena they add super-effectively to the feeling of Wrongness. They actually have something meaningful to give the series even when it’s basically an entire episode of Nanami being chased by elephants. It’s all part of the “shit here is fucked up” thing that Utena has going.
  6. A song or track that reminds me of this fandom: Gah, I could do a mini-playlist for this, hah.
     
     - Destroy everything you touch by Ladytron [youtube spotify lyrics] is a song for the creepywrong of everything to do with Akio and Anthy. Destroy everything you touch today / please destroy me this way / anything that may desert you / so it cannot hurt you…
     
     - Enemy Within by Frida Hyvönen [youtube spotify lyrics] is a song for Utena’s uncertainty. Possibly for everyone’s. The enemy within says a body of work is just as strong as its weakest point. And Utena and her weak points, oh. But it’s also an instruction. You must be kind to yourself.
     
      - Vals för satan (din vän pessimisten) | Waltz for satan (your friend the pessimist) by Kent [youtube spotify lyrics], which is unfortunately in Swedish, and is actually centred around a worker’s march BUT I AM IGNORING THAT, HAH. Anyway, it’s a song for Anthy’s cynicism and Utena’s hope, and the hope that Anthy wishes she could have. Here’s a translation of the lyrics:

  7. One miscellaneous awesome thing about the fandom: THERE IS ACTUALLY FIC. THERE IS ACTUALLY FIC AND IT IS GOOD.
  8. One completely random thought I have regarding this fandom: Welllllll I already gave you my Utena-and-Juri headcanon… let’s see. I do wonder about all this stuff with wanting to be a prince just like Utena. Because I think the point is not Utena being a prince. The point is Utena genuinely caring, rather than playing a role. The idea of the role of the prince is harmful; it breaks everyone, both the “prince” and the “princess”. So Utena isn’t going to be a prince. She’s going to be Utena. And that’s going to be enough. It’s going to be way better than a prince.
  9. One fic/essay rec, fanart, or fanvid: I’ve actually already linked to it, and the author of it is now following me, so this is all a bit embarrassing somehow, but this is still the best Utena fic. Untangled by Emilyenrose, Anthy/Utena, post series.
